How We Determine the Best Banks in Nevada

We started out by gathering data on the largest banks in Nevada based on how many branches they operated in the state. We then examined different reasons some of these stood out. We explored factors like product versatility, overall fee structure and best savings accounts. In the end, we boiled our list down to the best banks in Nevada. Read on to see why these came out on top.

Ally Bank: The Top Savings Account

Regardless of whether you’re looking to save for retirement, a vacation, a home or any other goal, a savings account can be an integral part of your financial plan. The Online Savings Account from Ally should be one of your top considerations, as it comes with a 4.25% APY. Account holders will also skip out on all monthly fees and minimums, which can only help your long-term savings.

If the integration of widespread ATM access within a set of checking account services is something you can get behind, Ally’s Spending Account should be near the top of your list. Ally has a partnership with the Allpoint ATM network, so customers can use any of its 55,000 ATMs at no charge. Besides this perk, your balance will accrue interest on a variable scale. In particular, Ally gifts a 0.25% APY to accounts with a minimum daily balance above $15,000, while all other accounts are left with a 0.10% APY.

Between the Apple and Android app stores, Ally customers rate its mobile app at 4.35 stars out of 5. This places it as one of the better apps on the market, and it features are equally as strong. Logging into the app will afford you things like mobile check deposit, an in-network ATM locator, digital account statements, up-to-date transaction histories and more.

Best National Bank With Branches in Nevada: Bank of America

Bank of America is one of the biggest banks in the country. So it's no surprise that it offers its clients nearly every banking product you can imagine. You can find everything from a basic checking account to mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETF) through a partnership with the brokerage giant Merrill Edge

So no matter what type of customer you are, Bank of America should be a solid fit. Plus, you’d have access to thousands of branches and fee-free ATMs throughout the nation. But no matter where you are, you’d have 24/7 access to your accounts via online banking. In addition, Bank of America offers a mobile banking app that was recently certified by J.D. Power for providing “an outstanding mobile banking experience.”

Best Regional Bank: Zions Bank

Those who want to work with a large regional bank may be interested in opening an account at Zions Bank. It operates in several states including Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Texas, Utah and Wyoming. In fact, Nevada houses about 50 branches.

Plus, you can find the same kinds of products you’d expect at a national bank including checking, savings and certificate of deposit (CD) accounts. Its long-term CD options, in particular, offer some of the best CD rates we’ve seen among similarly sized banks.

In addition, customers have access to the latest mobile banking features like mobile check deposit and seamless money transfer. At the time of this writing, users gave it a 4.2/5 star rating on the Apple App Store.

Best Savings Account Rate: CIT Bank Savings Builder Account

If you’re looking to start saving and have at least $100 to deposit, there are few better options than CIT’s Savings Builder account. Base level accounts are handed a 0.40% APY, but there’s plenty of room for improvement. In fact, a 1.00% APY is awarded to customers with a balance of $25,000 or who deposit $100 or more a month.

Don’t feel like you’re locked into one savings account at CIT. As a matter of fact, the bank has a wide variety of products to select from, including:

  • Premier High-Yield Savings account
  • Money market account
  • 6-month to 5-year term CDs
  • 2-year to 5-year jumbo CDs
  • 1-year to 4-year “RampUp” CDs
  • No-Penalty/11-Month CD

CIT Bank’s mobile app for Apple and Android devices has received solid reviews from current and former customers. More specifically, the around 3,000 user reviews that exist have led to a 3.85-star rating out of 5. Downloading the app affords you multiple features, like inter-account money transfers, fully up-to-date transaction histories, digital copies of your account statements and, perhaps most importantly, mobile check deposit.

Best Customer Service: U.S. Bank

Following the 13th annual U.S. Retail Banking Satisfaction Study, U.S. Bank came out on top. The study surveyed thousands of customers on different aspects of the customer service experience including advice and overall fee structure.

Nevada is home to nearly 100 U.S. Bank branches. But it's reach extends to thousands of offices nationwide. So even if you’re traveling, you're likely to find top-rated customer service near you. In fact, U.S. Bank stands as one of the largest banks in the country with more than 73,000 employees.

Plus, U.S. Bank offers a wide network of communication. For instance, you have access to customer service representatives via phone, email and thousands of physical branches. The company’s website even offers a detailed Q&A section where you can find answers before you decide to pick up the phone or make a trip to the bank.

Best Free Checking Accounts: WaFd Bank

If you’re interested in a simple checking account with no hidden fees, WaFd Bank has you covered with its Basic Checking Account. You can open one with $25. But after that, you don’t have to worry about any monthly service fees. You don’t even need to maintain a minimum balance.

However, you have to establish direct deposit and enroll in eSatetements. But that should be a minimal task compared to the benefits and peace of mind you’re getting with this account.

But if your financial life is a bit more complex, you can open a variety of other products including CD and money market accounts (MMAs). You can also apply for a mortgage.

Best High-Yield Checking Account: WaFd Bank

WaFd Bank also scores with Stellar Plus, its premium checking account. You can earn a 0.10% APY on it if you maintain a minimum balance of $0 to $99,000. The required balance to begin is low, and the interest rate climbs considerably high for a checking account even when compared to similar options at the best banks in the country.

And the bank gives you a few opportunities to lower your monthly service fee or avoid it altogether. For instance, the bank will waive it if you keep a minimum balance of at least $20,000. Or it will lower it to $3 if you keep a balance between $10,000 and $19,999. If you keep less than $10,000 in the account, the monthly service fee will be $8.

Best Money Market Account: Zions Bank

Money market accounts tend to generate higher interest rates than your typical savings account. And at Zions Bank, you can open an online MMA with an APY of 4.24%, which is greater than the national average rate for savings accounts.

However, the minimum deposit is at $50. You’d also be limited to online and mobile banking for this account. It’s important to note, however, that this option can compete with some of the best money market accounts we’ve analyzed. So it may be worth sacrificing access to physical branches. Plus, you’d still get checks.

Best for Students: Chase Bank

Chase bank offers one of the most student-friendly checking options we’ve seen. With a $25 minimum deposit, you can open a Chase College Checking account. And Chase will waive the monthly service fee for up to five years while you’re in college.

You can still avoid the fee if you set up a direct deposit of at least $500 or if you keep an average ending day balance of at least $5,000.
